The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, VFWD, provides review assistance for a variety of regulatory processes including, but not limited to:

• Vermont's Land-use Development Law Act 250
• Vermont's Endangered Species Law
• Vermont Wetlands Conditional Use Determination
• Corps of Engineers General Permit
• Stream Alteration and Stream Crossing Permit
• Dam Safety Permit

VFWD reviews for potential impacts to:

1. streams, shorelines and aquatic habitats
2. necessary wildlife habitat
3. rare, threatened and endangered species occurrences;
4. significant natural communities (may be considered rare and irreplaceable natural areas in Act 250)
5. department investments

A preliminary assessment involves review known locations of VFWD resources of interest and potential for these resources to occur in the landscape of the project. The VFWD will provide a response indicating the potential for impacts or, if warranted, request further on-site investigation.

Preliminary review for a host of mapped resources can also be done using the web based Vermont Agency of Natural Resource Environmental Interest Locator. This online map does not work for dial-up connections. Instructions

Once the viewer has been launched - use the zoom function, magnifying glass with plus - to zoom into areas of interest.

Click on View Layers folder on right hand side.

The bolded folders of interest contain the following layers:

Fish and Widlife: 1) rare, threatened and endangered species; 2) significant natural communities; and 3) deer winter areas

Fresh Water Resources: 1) Rivers and Streams (5K); and 2) Lakes and Ponds (5K)

Wetlands: 1) Vermont State Wetland Inventory (VSWI)

As an example click on the rare, threatened and endangered species layer in the Fish and Wildlife folder.

After zooming in then click on the check box to activate a layer and the button to active the identify button - make sure you are zoomed in enough for the layers to be active

Click on the name of the layer to find out detailed information about it.

The help button at the top of the map describes various functions that are available.

You can printout or save PDFs of maps that you create but will have to allow 'popups' from this site.

Mail or email a brief description and site locator map with the location clearly marked, preferably located on a USGS map to the appropriate contact listed below.
