Hunting Opportunities: Moose

Bullmoose Wildlife biologists prescribed an increase of moose hunting permits from 440 in 2003 to 850 in 2004 to help stabilize moose population growth in the Northeast Kingdom and slow it down in the rest of the state. Permits for the Northeast Kingdom been increased from 270 in 2003 to 640 for the 2004 hunting season. Biologists estimate the moose population at nearly 2,000 in Essex County and about 4,700 statewide.

Moose in Vermont are managed through a permit lottery system, by management unit, allowing the department to limit or expand the harvest numbers annually by region. This helps to conserve the resource and the habitat while still being able to offer quality hunting opportunities.

Moose permits are valid only for the six-day period starting the 3rd Saturday in October. Dates will change from year to year. These permits are valid for the moose season in the calendar year they are drawn. Permits are not transferable.

Resident fee to submit an application is $10, and is non-refundable. Nonresident application fee is $25 and is also non-refundable. Only one application may be submitted per person. If more than one application is submitted by an individual, all applications from that individual will be disqualified.

Permits are drawn by lottery. Up to 10% of the permits may be issued to nonresidents. Applicants who are successfully drawn in the lottery will be notified by mail and will receive a Moose Hunter's Guidebook and Permit Form along with instructions to complete the Permit Form. Successful applicants must possess a current year's Vermont hunting license before returning their Permit Form in order to secure the permit. Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
