Fishing is a great way to make lasting memories with your children. Here are some tips for a fun-filled outing.
- pack plenty of snacks and cold drinks
- choose a spot close to home (or camp) to minimize time in the car
- make sure there are restrooms nearby
- morning trips are best – the fish bite better and kids have more energy
- pick a sunny day with moderate temperatures
- keep the trip short – a couple hours at most
- take plenty of breaks from fishing (kids have a short attention span)
- leave your fishing rod at home
- emphasize that fishing is fun, catching is a bonus
- plan alternate activities to do if the weather turns bad or your child gets bored
- target smaller, more numerous fish like perch and sunfish
- sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat will help protect your child from sunburn – avoid fishing in the middle of the day if possible
- bring insect repellent
- have your children wear a life jacket if fishing near deep or swift water or if fishing from a boat
- take lots of pictures
