As warm weather approaches many of us are gearing up for the spring and summer fishing seasons. The five state fish culture stations are gearing up as well.

Trophy stocking
2010 will see the continuation of the VT “trophy” fish stocking program. The number of trophy fish (2YR +) stocked will be close to 20,000 statewide.

Nearly 25 miles of streams and rivers designated as trophy water will be available for angling this year in Vermont. In addition 39 ponds and lakes will be stocked with trophy fish totaling more than 5000 acres recieving 2 year old fish.

2010 will be an exciting year of angling if you like catching big fish.

Yearlings/Smolts
Inland waters of Vermont will be stocked with over 390,000 yearling landlocked salmon, brook, brown, lake, and rainbow trout. This area encompases over 500 miles of streams and rivers, and over 67,000 acres of lakes, and ponds.

Lake Champlain will be stocked with over 240,000 yearling landlocked salmon, steelhead, and brown, trout. And over 160,000 landlocked salmon fry, and over 150,000 walleye fingerlings.

Its hard to think about open water fishing when there is two feet of snow on the ground but spring is right around the corner. So get your rod and reel ready, and tune up your boat because 2010 should be and exciting year on the water, and remember if you have the oportunity, take a kid fishing.
