WHAT IS THE “LET’S GO FISHING” PROGRAM?

The “Let’s Go Fishing” (LGF) Program is an organized effort to train a network of volunteers to teach and encourage young people and their families how to fish. LGF believes that “Fishing is more than catching fish.” The Program emphasizes four themes:
  • Hands-on experience fishing
  • Aquatic ecology, management
  • Importance of habitat conservation
  • Ethics

A Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department “Let’s Go Fishing” Workshop is a hands-on aquatic resource education program that focuses on introducing people of all ages – with an emphasis on families – to fishing and water resources in Vermont. Participants get a chance to re-connect with the land and experience our state’s beautiful outdoors in a healthy, happy, and ethical manner. Each workshop teaches participants this, along with developing an understanding for the sport of fishing and the natural resources it depends upon.

The Program…
  • educates young people about water ecology and fishing,
  • helps young people become aware of and appreciate Vermont’s fish population, their habitat needs, and ways to be stewards of these resources,
  • and teaches proper fishing skills and ethics, including respect for the resource and the responsibility to know the rules and regulations of fishing.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

Volunteers are needed to expand the Let’s Go Fishing Program (LGF) to all areas of the state. Currently, LGF has about 180 certified instructors throughout Vermont, but we need more! There are two types of volunteers needed. The first type of volunteer is a Certified Instructor. Certified Instructors complete a weekend training program where they learn the basics of holding their own Let’s Go Fishing event. Most of the Certified Instructors are affiliated with a club or group that hosts the clinic. The next type of volunteers is those that want to help instructors with the clinics. These volunteers can help teach parts of the clinic or help keep things organized.

The LGF Program is also interested in teachers who want to use the program in their classrooms. LGF has been used in math, physical education, science and reading classes. Special training is available to guide teachers through the curriculum, and show them how to use it effectively.

It is easy to become a volunteer. If you are over 18 and would like to share your love of fishing with the next generation of anglers, just complete an application or contact the program coordinator here at the office and we will let you know when the next available training is taking place.
