Fishing is a great way to make lasting memories with your children. Here are some tips for a fun-filled outing.

fishing with dad
  • pack plenty of snacks and cold drinks
  • choose a spot close to home (or camp) to minimize time in the car
  • make sure there are restrooms nearby
  • morning trips are best – the fish bite better and kids have more energy
  • pick a sunny day with moderate temperatures
  • keep the trip short – a couple hours at most
  • take plenty of breaks from fishing (kids have a short attention span)
  • leave your fishing rod at home
  • emphasize that fishing is fun, catching is a bonus
  • plan alternate activities to do if the weather turns bad or your child gets bored
  • target smaller, more numerous fish like perch and sunfish
  • sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat will help protect your child from sunburn – avoid fishing in the middle of the day if possible
  • bring insect repellent
  • have your children wear a life jacket if fishing near deep or swift water or if fishing from a boat
  • take lots of pictures
