Wild brook trout need clear, cold water

Tucked away in Vermont's clear, cold streams lies a unique, colorful creature - the brook trout. Brook trout are native to eastern Canada and the United States, as far west as Minnesota. Kingsbury Branch Brook Trout

More than 200 years ago, before large-scale logging of Vermont's forests, pollution, and the introduction of non-native species, wild brook trout thrived in Vermont's larger rivers. Today, Vermont's wild brook trout still exist in small upland streams and some small to medium sized rivers.

Upper Winooskii Brook Trout

Brook trout have worm-like marking against a greenish back, and their flanks are covered with light yellowish spots, with small bright red spots surrounded by blue halos along the lateral mid-section. They have squarish tails, hence the nickname "Squaretails."
