Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program

Applying For WHIP
  • Applying for WHIP is simple, and applications are accepted on a continuous basis. The first step is to contact either the USDA Service Center in your county or one of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department habitat specialists.

  • Once initial contact has been made, a site visit will be scheduled to determine your objectives and what habitat practices can and will be done on your property. This site visit will then help the USDA personnel and the Vermont Habitat Specialist develop a rough plan for your property.

  • Once the plan has been developed, each property is then evaluated and ranked with others statewide. This ranking and evaluation determines which projects will be funded throughout the State. Development of the final Conservation Plan will now begin.

  • Together with the Conservation Plan, a Conservation Contract is also developed which schedules habitat practices and cost shares over the life of the contract. When these documents are signed money is obligated to your project for the life of the contract.

  • USDA NRCS and VT FWD personnel with then begin to assist you with implementing your Conservation Plan. Through this process, you will be creating a diverse and well managed wildlife habitat on your property.

  • Download a WHIP Application
